The Pool of Bethesda
I love the story of the healing pool of Bethesda found in John 5:1-4. The Hebrew word "Bethesda" means: the house of kindness, piety and mercy. This is where the healing power of God is manifested in the ministry of mercy and compassion.
"After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had." (John 5:1-4 KJV)
In Jerusalem city there was a "certain place" by the sheep gate. God chooses the place for an outpouring of His kindness, mercy, and healing to be by the place where the animals were brought in for slaughter and sacrifice in the temple. Talk about one of the most unlikely places for revival and a move of God! Maybe your church or ministry is a "certain place" too.
Healing and Revival Vision
In January of 1999, while I was praying in a church in Abbotsford, BC, Canada—during a Sunday morning service—I heard something extraordinary. It sounded like 100,000 people in a stadium praying and singing in different tongues and languages.
Although I was worshiping the Lord, and there probably weren't any more than 30 people in that church service, no one was hearing what I was hearing. I even thought to myself, Maybe somebody was piping in a choir of angel songs through a speaker! I said, "Something is happening in the room! I can hear angels! I can hear the tongues of angels!" Then all of a sudden, I was on my face and I was caught up in a vision. Immediately, it was like I was out of my body and in the spirit.
In the open vision, I was in a large arena on a football field, and in the midst of a game (I don't play football or really any sport! I was overwhelmed)! The scoreboard said it was the fourth quarter—the ball was in our hands (the Church) and we, the people of God, were headed for the end zone. This felt like the last of the last days move of God.
It was a close game, and the demonic hordes were a great resistance. The clock was about to run out in just seconds, and we had one last play. I realized we were either going to "take this thing" or that we would miss out on a divine opportunity for a fresh outpouring of His Spirit in America.
In the vision, I was aware that the people in the stands were not people after all, but healing angels. They were chanting, "Go Church, go! Go Church, go! Go Church, go!" It was a host of healing angels. And in that instant, I saw that these angels were about to be assigned to specific cities, churches, regions, nations, and ministries for the purpose of great healing and Kingdom demonstration of the Gospel.
Stirring the Pools Again
In that encounter, I realized that these were like the angels in times past, who were assigned to men like John G. Lake in Spokane, John Alexander Dowie in Zion City, Illinois, William Branham, Oral Roberts, and many others in the (1947-1958) Voice of Healing Revival in America. I also realized that these angels were like the angel that came down and stirred the healing pool of Bethesda in John 5, and there would be many more pools of healing in the nations. This was a great healing revival I saw, and it would bring a great harvest of souls. It's happening now!
The healing pool of Bethesda drew multitudes of sick people from all over the region, Israel, and Syria, who would come to the pool. Then at a certain time, a healing angel would come down and stir the waters supernaturally. Then, whoever was first to step into the water after it was stirred, would be healed. The greatest miracles take place in the moving and stirring of the Holy Spirit.
There was something special happening in that place because God had sent this specific angel at this specific time. When the power of the Lord is present to heal, that is when we must move with faith into the pool. There are certain times in which God's healing power is manifest in a greater degree (see Luke 5:17). Yes, I'm talking about a tangible, healing anointing.
I am not saying that God doesn't heal through His Word, prayer, faith, or in other ways we see in the Scripture. Clearly in this story, there was a resident, healing atmosphere in a certain place that would manifest at a certain time. May we learn how to be sensitive to the stirring and moving of the Spirit and to learn to prepare a place for a greater outpouring of God's power.
Pray for the Multiplication of Healing
This was a healing pool, a resident healing pool, and an anointing in a city by the sheep gate, that gathered the nations. This was a tangible, manifested, healing anointing—moving in the atmosphere—greater than any one man or woman with a healing ministry.
My prayer is that God would multiply and open the healing wells of ministries again like He did for John G. Lake in Spokane, WA and South Africa. That there would be places that would become residence for "pools of healing" and miracles like in the days of Alexander Dowie and Aimee Semple McPherson with the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles.
My prayers are for 100 resident pools of healing revival—like Bethesda in Jerusalem, Toronto, Pensacola, Lakeland, Florida, and many other current places of great outpouring that are happening now. May God open up these healing pools in cities, regions, nations and churches again. May the sick gather from around the world for the fresh release of God's healing power.
