Microneedle coronavirus vaccine triggers immune response in mice; blocking receptor stops spread; gene linked to autism sex differences

April 14, 2020 Edition

COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation, and we at NIH are doing everything we can toward the development of diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. You can find the latest public health information from CDC at www.coronavirus.gov and the latest research information from NIH at www.nih.gov/coronavirus. Meanwhile, science continues to progress on many other fronts, and we will continue to try to bring you stories across a wide range of topics.

Blocking cellular receptor stops spread of tau in mouse brains

In experiments in cells and mice, blocking a cell receptor called LPR1 stopped both normal and harmful forms of tau, which are involved in dementias, from spreading between neurons.

Gene linked to sex differences in autism

Researchers found that a small cluster of mutations in the NLGN4X gene, which has been linked to autism spectrum disorder, may explain the sex differences tied to the gene.

"Trusting God in the Middle of Crisis"

Darren Canning, Ontario, Canada

From the Desk of Steve Shultz:

Steve ShultzI really appreciate this transparent word through Darren Canning of Canada. Yes, fear is running rampant as many are facing shakings across the earth right now.

More than ever we need to put our TRUST in God.

I want you to read this heart-felt word from Darren...as God is calling on many to rise up now:

I believe in this hour some of our greatest warriors will rise with healing in their wings. They will become people without fear, who will march to the ends of the earth carrying the flag of victory that only comes in the name of Jesus.

Amen...be encouraged to trust Him as we rise up together! (To Subscribe to the Elijah List subscribe here.)

Trusting God in the Middle of Crisis

In the course of human life many trials and tribulations do come. There are personal trials that many face each day – relationships with loved ones that go sour, divorces and deaths, prodigals lost in drug addiction and even terminal diseases that we don't know whether we will get through or not. Many of us have faced one or many of these things. When we face them on our own strength, great fear can come upon us, but when we face them with the peace of Jesus in our hearts it is easier to get through the storm.

There are other crises that we have faced. I was a National Security Analyst when September 11, 2001 happened. It was my first year working in government. When that crisis hit, the entire world was impacted. The airline industry was never the same again. The word "terrorist" began to take on a global meaning and many began to fear for their safety.

About 5 or 6 years ago we had another crisis. Suddenly, ISIS terrorists began killing people in the most heinous of ways. All over the world, Christians began to shudder with fear at the thought of becoming martyrs. I remember seeing the Syrian Christians kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs on the Mediterranean sea as men stood behind them and killed them. I couldn't even watch the videos. I wouldn't do it. (Photo via Unsplash)

He Has Good Plans

In our generation we have been through wars. We have seen famine and floods. We have seen tremendous earthquakes. Everything that could happen has happened and yet we are still here. We are alive. There is a destiny for you and for me. God is still saying the words that He said to Jeremiah, "'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'" (Jeremiah 29:11).

I am remembering back to December 2004. In those days, I was an intellectual agnostic living a humanistic lifestyle. My God was me. I lived for myself only. As a result of this lifestyle, the fruit of my life was misery. Deep pain abided in my heart. I had suffered from much depression, anxiety and fear. I even tried to commit suicide twice. Maybe it is too long ago for you to remember, but that December there was a crazy Tsunami that happened in Southeast Asia. Over 300,000 people were swallowed up by the waves of the sea.

For 10 days I.... (continue reading)
