Institute Matters | ||||
SAIMM - The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy
The SAIMM was founded in 1894, and will soon be celebrating its 122nd anniversary. It is quite remarkable that we have survived so many challenges and changes over the years and still continue to grow. The reasons we have done so is because of the leadership within the Institute and the continued support of our members. We realise that if we are to continue for another century than we must remain relevant to our members. Office Bearers and Council are constantly looking at ways to do so and one of our strategies has been the establishment of the Young Professionals Council, to look after the interests of our young professionals who are the future leaders of our industry. They have a vibrant Council who are taking on the challenges of mentorship and unemployment as well as supporting undergraduates and postgraduates at universities. This is no mean feat and we are encouraged by their enthusiasm. The SAIMM is a founding member of the Global Mineral Professionals Alliance (GMPA). Other members are:
Through our collaboration we are increasing awareness of the industry globally, and offering our members "visiting" status if they are resident in any of the countries where we have a base. In addition, we are a partner of the OneMine global mining database where members have access to papers published by our sister organisations. You can access OneMine through the SAIMM website. We are also a member of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG), who facilitate global mining collaborations on solutions to common industry problems. We have also subscribed to the Technical Library for a year and members can take advantage of all the services they have on offer by registering on the site. We are registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a voluntary organisation. ECSA have developed a Continued Professional Development programme or CPD for all registered engineers to allow them to remain current. Our members obtain these valuable CPD points when they attend our conferences. Points can also be accrued through the publication of research or technical articles in professional journals such as the Journal of the SAIMM. Professional engineers registered with ECSA receive a rebate in their membership fees of R1 110 which is almost equivalent to the SAIMM membership fees. Members receive the SAIMM Journal which is published monthly, at no cost. The Journal is the flagship of the SAIMM, and we publish technical articles which cover topics of relevance to professionals in the industry, as well as papers presented at our conferences. We continue to arrange high level, technical conferences which members may attend at a reduced fee. We also partner with sister organisations in order to avoid duplication of efforts. You can view all our conferences here. Our 5 star Incentive Programme offers members discounted rates on cellular phones, hotels, and car hire. In addition we encourage members to propose new members, submit papers to the Journal and referee papers. The top five members in these categories receive free attendance at our annual banquet. A number of companies have recently changed their policy with regard to paying membership fees, and we have lost some members for this reason. However, we believe that with the changes in the global industry, this may become an acceptable practice and we appeal to members not to lose sight of the benefits of retaining their membership, even if they have to pay it personally. If necessary, you may discuss payment options with our Membership Department. If you would like to comment on any of the above initiatives please send an e-mail to Sam at Sam@saimm.co.za or call her (011) 834-1273/7. We look forward to hearing from you.
