Organization of the 35th International Geological Congress in Cape Town, August 27 to September 4, is progressing well, with over 4800 oral and poster presentations accepted from well over 5000 abstract submissions. Delegates from 93 countries are planning to attend. There are 48 themes at this point, and some of the sessions and symposia will be of particular interest to the mining and metallurgy community.
There are three core topics of the meeting, Geoscience in Society, Geoscience in the Economy, and Fundamental Geoscience. While there will be topics of interest to SAIMM members in all three core topics, the economic stream is likely to be of particular interest. Note also that while the technical program runs for five full days, day registrations are available.
Specific themes and symposia of possible interest include:
Under Core Topic – Geoscience in Society (1500 oral and poster presentations) - Spectral Geology in Exploration (minerals, hydrocarbon, geothermal) and Production - Geological mapping of Africa – a key for sustainable use of earth resources - Geoscience Information Super-Symposium - GIS-based geochemical data analysis and mineral prospectivity mapping - Global Geoscience Professionalism and Geoethics (theme)
Under Core Topic – Geoscience in the Economy (1139 oral and poster presentations) - Mineral deposit footprints - Quantitative geoscience data analysis for mineral exploration targeting - The Mineral system approach: the paradigm and future trends - Geostatistics for Geological Resources Modeling - Major Mineral Deposits of Africa (sponsored by Vale) - Processes governing ore formation in the Bushveld Complex and other mafic and ultramafic magmatic systems (IAGOD-CODMUR sponsored) - Sediment-hosted ore deposits - Coal (theme with four symposia and one general session) - Bushveld Complex Symposium - Witwatersrand Symposium - Critical metals - a global perspective (theme) - Resourcing Future Generations (theme) - Gold Mineralizing Systems (jointly sponsored by SEG and SGA) (theme)
There is much more that will be of interest to mining engineers, metallurgists, and economic geologists. Seehttp://www.35igc.org/Verso/1/Scientific-Programme and click on the core topics, followed by the theme of interest. From the theme page, a list of accepted abstracts and authors is available. The scheduled times and venues within the CTICC and adjacent hotels will be posted on the website during the first week of July.
There will be in excess of 100 stands in the exhibition hall associated with the meeting; see the list on the web site.
