Mechanisation and modernisation might be new to underground mining, but they have already been successfully implemented in many manufacturing and service sectors. By looking at how technology was implemented in the manufacture of fire-arms over 500 years, we can draw clear parallels with mining. Future mines will directly employ fewer people, but to be successful, employees will need to operate at a different level. There will be far more people in staff functions and fewer in line functions, until the difference becomes insignificant. The Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems provides courses to shape these miners of the future.

About the presenter:Declan Vogt studied electrical engineering at Wits, and has a PhD in electronics from the University of York in the UK. He started his career at the Chamber of Mines Research Organisation, which became part of the CSIR, working on geophysical tools for in-mine imaging. He was the developer of the Aardwolf borehole radar, still in use on various platinum mines. Later, he was responsible for managing mining research at the CSIR. Since 2014 he has been the director of the Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems at Wits.
