"Encountering the Life-Altering Presence of God"
Steve Porter, Rochester, NY

From the Desk of Steve Shultz:

Steve ShultzSteve Porter knows how to get in the "presence of God" in such a powerful and intimate way. We both had the same spiritual father, Wade Taylor, who was a vast teacher about intimacy with the Lord. I still miss Wade very much.

In Steve's article, he shares a dream in which God showed him three promises from the Lord, and each will teach you to draw closer to Him.

Steve shares this "must do" for us:

Jesus has divine wisdom that we obviously do not have. His desire is to share with us His divine plan for every situation in life, whether big or small. This plan, however, can only be revealed to you when you put your total trust in Him and accept His will above your own. You may feel God is unfair at times, but you will see His divine wisdom in the end. I challenge you, even now, to let go of your problems and ask God for help. Begin by putting everything at the Lord's feet through prayer, and then look to God in faith for your answer. Remember that the Lord is always with you, and He will see you through when you put your trust in Him.

I pray Steve Porter's word will deepen your connection with the Lord in every situation you may be facing. (To Subscribe to the Elijah List subscribe here.)

The Dream

During my time at Bible school in the early 90s at Pinecrest Bible Training Center, I had a dream one night that so stirred me that it forever changed my life. The Lord revealed several promises to me that I would like to share with you.

In the dream, I was sitting alone in my car, as if I were waiting for someone. It was approaching evening and the sun was setting. To my amazement, the Lord Himself appeared in the passenger's seat. He looked at me with more love in His eyes than I have ever seen in anyone else. His love seemed to flow out from His eyes to permeate every fiber of my being.

I felt total peace with Him sitting next to me. We said nothing, and at first, I only looked at Him and soaked in all the love I could. It was as if the Lord knew everything about me, but still loved me anyway. After some time, I asked, "Jesus, have you ever ridden in a car before?"

He just looked at me and said with a smile, "Steve, of course. I am always with you." His answer greatly comforted me. It replaced any doubt in my mind that He would ever forsake me. Again, there was a time of silence, as His great love continued to pour out to me. Then I spoke to the Lord again, "Jesus, I want to know You! Really know You!"

"You can," the Lord responded with an expression of full confidence in me.

No Fears and No Problems, Only Jesus

It touched me so deeply to know that Jesus had faith in me. I will never forget how I then laid my head upon His chest, as John the Beloved did so long ago. I felt at total ease. There were no fears and no problems. All I knew was that the Lord accepted me just the way I was, and together we could work through any problem because Jesus had faith in me.

I told the Lord one more thing: "Jesus, I want to please You."

"Obey My commandments," was His response. The next thing I knew, I was wide awake and my dream was over, but the Lord's last words still echoed through my head: "Obey My commandments." That night the Lord taught me three precious promises that I greatly treasure.

You Do Not Walk Alone

First, the Lord is always with me. I will never have to walk through the "Valley of the Shadow of Death" alone. No matter how hard life gets, the Lord promises to always be with me. In Hebrews 13:5, the Word says that the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. I don't need to worry about tomorrow because Jesus is right there to walk alongside me. It is so easy to believe the lie of satan. He tells you that you are all alone and that no one cares. But Jesus cares!

It is the Lord's desire for you to learn how to put your hand in His. This will build a trust between you and God that will carry you throughout your life. Many young people try every way but the right way to solve their problems. Many try to work out their own problems with their own strength or abilities, but this only leads to a temporary solution or, even worse, disaster.

The Truth of Knowing God

The second promise the Lord taught me is the truth of knowing God. So many young people just know about God. They have read about Him in the Bible, or heard about Him at church, but they have never come to know His manifest presence. The Lord wants you, regardless of your age, to fully experience Himself. You will only truly know God when you completely and fully commit your life to Him. There must be a desire on your part to want to know Him. If you are thirsty for God, He will fill you up. Isaiah 55:1-2 explains that God extends an invitation for all who are thirsty to come.

Do you want to walk out of the realm of just knowing about Him and truly know God? God is no respecter of persons. He reveals Himself even to the teenagers of this day. The desire of God's heart is to find teens with whom He can share His heart. You see, God doesn't just want to hear your prayers. No, He wants to speak to you! That is how you develop your relationship with Him.

You Please God By Obeying Him

Last of all, Jesus promised me that I will please God by obeying His commandments. The Lord says in John 14:15 that if I love Him, then I will obey His commandments. If I truly want to please God, I will do what He says out of love for Him, because I won't want to hurt the Lord in any way. Of course, as humans, we will mess up from time to time, but that's when we can thank God for His grace and forgiveness. It is important that we do not abuse this grace with our own rebellion. Remember, it is not good enough just knowing God's Word, we must obey it (James 1:22-23). Keep this in mind and it will strengthen your joy in knowing that you are pleasing Him.

Take these three promises and apply them to your own life. They will lead you on the road towards spiritual growth. You see, God desires to mature the people of this day – to bring them into a personal relationship with Him. Will you begin today by personalizing these promises in your own life? You will be amazed at the progress you see in yourself as you walk with Him. (To Subscribe to the Elijah List subscribe here.)
