"In general, the cheaper the pitcher, the worse job it did filtering out the toxins.” -- Justin Chaffin

(Columbus, OH) — Water pitchers designed to rid water of harmful contaminants are not created equal, new research has found. (Photo Credit: Pexels)

Scientists from The Ohio State University compared three popular pitcher brands' ability to clear dangerous microcystins from tap water. They found that while one did an excellent job, other pitchers allowed the toxins - which appear during harmful algal blooms (HABs) - to escape the filter and drop into the drinking water.

The purifier that filtered water fastest, and which was made entirely of coconut-based activated carbon, removed 50 percent or less of the microcystins from the water. But the purifier that filtered water slowest - and which was made from a blend of active carbon - rendered the microcystins undetectable in drinking water. The study appears in the journal Water Science Technology: Water Supply.

"Because drinking-water treatment plants also use activated carbon, I figured that these home filters might also remove some microcystins, but I wasn't expecting results this good and such big differences among the pitchers," said Justin Chaffin, the study's lead author and a senior researcher and research coordinator at Ohio State's Stone Laboratory. Stone Lab is located on Lake Erie and serves as a hub for researchers throughout the Midwest working on issues facing the Great Lakes...

"Our findings suggest that consistently participating in the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each week, such as brisk walking or biking, in middle age may be enough to reduce your heart failure risk by 31 percent.” – Dr. Chiadi Ndumele

(Baltimore, MD) — By analyzing reported physical activity levels over time in more than 11,000 American adults, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers conclude that increasing physical activity to recommended levels over as few as six years in middle age is associated with a significantly decreased risk of heart failure, a condition that affects an estimated 5 million to 6 million Americans. (Photo Credit: Pexels)

The same analysis found that as little as six years without physical activity in middle age was linked to an increased risk of the disorder.

Unlike heart attack, in which heart muscle dies, heart failure is marked by a long-term, chronic inability of the heart to pump enough blood, or pump it hard enough, to bring needed oxygen to the body. The leading cause of hospitalizations in those over 65, the disorder's risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and a family history...

The benefits of getting vitamins, minerals, and fiber from fresh fruit, rich whole grains, and other features of what nutritional experts call a full and balanced breakfast have already been well-documented, but few studies have focused on hardened and narrowed arteries.

(Washington, DC) – Many nutrition experts agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and now a new study finds that skipping it can actually lead to atherosclerosis, or the hardening and narrowing of the arteries. The condition involves a buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can be prevented by starting your day off with a healthy meal. (Photo Credit: Flickr)

The benefits of getting vitamins, minerals, and fiber from fresh fruit, rich whole grains, and other features of what nutritional experts call a full and balanced breakfast have already been well-documented, but few studies have focused on hardened and narrowed arteries.

Researchers in Madrid examined 4,052 male and female adults ages 40 to 54 with no signs of cardiovascular or kidney disease. They used a computerized questionnaire to learn about their diets. Their breakfast patterns were based on the percentage of their total daily energy that came from breakfast...
