About the Presentation:
The mining industry has always been regarded as a male-dominated industry with South African legislation prohibiting women from working underground until 1996. The adoption of the Mining Charter in 2002 required that a mining company's labour force comprises at least 10% of females.
These changes in legislation compelled mining companies to actively pursue the recruitment of young females through bursaries and internships, which has led to a rise in the number of female students enrolled and graduating with a Mining Engineering qualification at tertiary institutions.
This presentation informs the mining industry of the factors contributing to the retention of female mining engineering graduates in South African underground hard rock mines.
