"Learning to Develop a Strong Spirit"
Kim Potter, Dayton, TN

Over the past few months, there is a subject God has brought up to me over and again. It's the subject of having a strong spirit. After weeks of God speaking to me about building a strong spirit within me, it seemed everywhere I turned someone was saying something about a strong spirit.

Don't Shut the Door

Most recently, Kenneth Copeland said, "A strong spirit makes a way for God to move. If you are talking doubt and unbelief, it shuts the door." Yikes! If you are talking doubt and unbelief, it shuts the door! However, a strong spirit makes a way—a door in which God can move.

Proverbs 18:14 in the Amplified version says, "The spirit of a man sustains him in sickness, but as for a broken spirit, who can bear it?"

To sustain means to bear, to uphold, to keep from falling, to keep alive. In other words, a strong spirit will cause you to stand firm in faith regardless of what is going on around you.

Why is that important? Because if we do not waver at the promises of God we will see them manifest in our lives, every single time. Hebrews 3:14 tells us that we will partake of all Christ died to give us if we do one thing: if we trust God and His Word steadfast to the end. In other words, we do not waver.

If you have a strong spirit, you won't begin to waver when time passes without seeing your answer manifest. You won't be moved each morning when you wake up and didn't see breakthrough the day before. You will continue to stand firm on His Word knowing that He is God and He does NOT lie. You will continue to call Him faithful, even while you wait.

That's the truth about a strong spirit, but what about a weak spirit? How do you know if your spirit is weak? You'll know this if you constantly feel overwhelmed. Proverbs 24:10 says, "If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small."

We Have All We Need to Triumph

God never meant for adversity to destroy us. He gave us all we would ever need to triumph over adversity. However, to gain victory over adversity, our spirit must become strong and remain strong. Are you feeling weary and anxious? These too are signs of a weak spirit.

Galatians 6:9 says, "And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."

If you are reading this and feel perhaps your spirit is not as strong as it should be, don't be discouraged, you can begin this very day to strengthen your spirit.

It begins with the Word of God. If you want a strong spirit, you MUST read the Word of God, daily. Every single day. His word is our MANNA. In the Old Testament, God sent manna daily to feed the Israelites. We too must eat of this bread, the Word of the living God, daily. That is the main thing that will keep our spirits strong.

I recently heard a minister say that listening to sermons was the same as taking a supplement, while reading the Word of God for yourself is your true nourishment. I believe this to be truth. It's great to listen to sermons but don't allow it to be your only source of the Word of God. You must read the Word for yourself and you must do it daily, if you want a strong spirit.

We all want to thrive in God. To do that, we must develop strong spirits AND maintain strong spirits. I believe we are in a time of thriving. I also believe God is showing us how to thrive and that begins by strengthening our spirits.

Let's start today by digging in His Word. Let's immerse ourselves in His Word and watch our spirits grow strong! In doing so, victory will be ours...every time.
