"Digging Your Well of Faith and Stepping Into Overflow"
David Tomberlin, Pasadena, CA

From the Desk of Steve Shultz:

Steve Shultz      The Scriptures say it very clearly: "Without faith it is impossible to please God..." (Hebrews 11:6).

I know many have attested to God calling them to step out in FAITH as never before. It can be both exciting and scary at the same time.

But that's when we get to see God show up in a grand way on our behalf.

I want you to read this recent article from David Tomberlin and be encouraged to step out in faith as the Lord leads you!

"Digging Your Well of Faith and Stepping Into Overflow"
David Tomberlin, Pasadena, CA

Have you ever dug a well? Most people nowadays probably have not. Historically, wells are so important. If you did not live next to a river you had to dig down, usually very deep, to find water.

For humans, water is life. We are about 2/3 water and our planet is about 2/3 water. Biologically speaking, water is life.

How, When and Where?

A funny thing about digging a well is there is no "payment" until you hit the water. Without modern equipment, it could take days, weeks or longer to reach the water. Until you get to the water there is nothing to show for your efforts. All while you are exerting that effort, questions in your mind come up. Am I digging in the right place? Will this work be worth it? Is there an easier way? Do other people have it this hard?

There is no payoff, no sign of hope, no confirmation until the water starts to leak in. How long does it take? The unfortunate answer is it takes as long as it does until you hit the water. Many things in life are predictable: changing of seasons, hands on a clock, and of course, the infamous death and taxes.

Things in the spirit realm are often not predictable. This is where people get confused and sometimes disillusioned. How long do I need to pray to get a breakthrough? When will revival come? When will I step into greater increase and blessing? When will there be a shift in my family for the better? Where is my healing miracle? These things are not predictable, they take time, and we never know exactly how much. They are like digging a well.

The Point of Overflow

There is a great promise in Scripture that encourages me to keep digging to the point of overflow. Overflow is when you dig the well and you start to see water in the dirt, then as you keep digging, likely ever more ferociously, you start to see more water than dirt; and as you dig further still, it becomes a flow of water and you break into overflow!

The Scripture admonishes us, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9)

But how can we keep digging when we see no water? How can we keep pushing and keep going? Others seem to get water easily; the ungodly seem to thrive while we seem to labor without victory. Why, God?

The simple and unpopular answer is it's a test of faith. The Bible says in Hebrews 11:6, "And without faith it is impossible to please God..." Why does God need our faith? He has everything, right?

Strength Formed in the Fight

I once had a close friend whose father was very wealthy. His dad was like a second father to me and he treated me much like a son. Until my mid 20s I had always struggled financially. I always wondered why this person who had great wealth never helped me. He knew me well enough to know I lacked in many ways, yet he let me struggle.

As I grew, I learned and understood more. I needed the strength formed in the fight to handle the overflow.

If God gave you your breakthrough too early you would not be able to stand in victory for long. My friend's dad came from nothing. He came poverty and other serious problems, and despite it all, he became a huge financial success. He learned through adversity so he knew his strength came from struggle. The lessons he learned gave him the ability to not be swept away when the well started flowing into a river.

He did not want to stunt my growth by providing a path without challenges. Although he faced hardships when he was young, most of his life he lived in the overflow, not just for himself but for others also. This man was able to employ many people, bless his family and give millions to the Church and other charities. He had faith to grow, change and develop, and his faith sustained him in the victory. Faith fights, faith struggles, faith wins and faith sustains the win.

You see, friends, God is pleased with faith because it develops us. It builds our muscles of character, integrity, strength, and perseverance. Like the person digging the well who has to believe they will see the water flowing when they see nothing—our walk and life of faith are much like this. You see it by faith, you act on your faith, then you realize the fruit of your faith and you keep that fruit going by...you guessed it...faith.

Are you digging a well now, believing to step into overflow? Keep digging. See the water coming soon with the eyes of faith.

Do you have family struggles? Envision growth. Do you have financial challenges? Work hard, sow faithfully and believe big. Do you have physical ailments? Get in the Word and read every Scripture about healing. Get around faith-filled friends and believe together.

You are digging a well. You will breakthrough if you don't give up!
