Event Brief:
The Johannesburg Branch of the SAIMM has, for over 5 years, devoted the August meeting to the Annual Student Debate, which has, over the years showcased some of the talent which is up and coming in our local universities. Unfortunately, due to the current global situation, physical meetings are not possible, and the nature of the Student's Debate does not lend itself to virtual communication mechanisms.
However, to maintain the August student focus, the Johannesburg Branch has decided to host a virtual panel discussion entitled "Training, mentoring and knowledge transfer, futureproofing our industry".
The intention is to engage a number of stakeholders in the training and development of the leaders of our industry in the future, and discuss interactively what we are doing now, is it enough, what should we be doing to safeguard the future of our industry and its skills-base.
The plan is to include representatives of the various stakeholder groups in the discussion, including; the institutions (both as recipients of, and providers of the fundamental skills), industry (as end-users of the skills and custodians of the future), and the private sector (as facilitators of post-graduate knowledge transfer). Each panelist will offer a few thoughts relevant to the topic and then the discussion will be opened to questions from the audience, which we hope will include thoughts from all sectors.
